Happy Chap Goh Mei everyone!

Hi folks!
Very fast...today is the last day of Chinese New Year; i.e. Chap Goh Mei/Meh...
What is Chap Goh Mei?

From wikipedia:

Chap Goh Meh or Tzap Goh Mei (Chinese: ; pinyin: shí wǔ míng; literally "fifteen night") represents the fifteenth and final day of the Lunar New Year period as celebrated by Chinese migrant communities. The term is from the Hokkien dialect and refers to the fifteenth day of the first month, which is the occasion of the first full moon of the New Year.
The occasion is marked by feasting and various festivities, including the consumption of tangyuan and Kue Keranjang. In traditional Chinese culture, it is also celebrated as the Lantern Festival or the Shang Yuan Festival. In Southeast Asia, however, it coincides with the Chinese Valentine's Day.[1] It is also when young unmarried women gather to toss tangerines into the sea, in a hope that their future spouse will pick it up – a custom that originated in Penang, Malaysia. In the past, this was also the only day that unmarried ladies could be seen with their partners.

So, how is your CNY thus far? Had good time visiting your family and friends?
This year I managed to visit some close buddies and felt really satisfied and grateful as there was a year my kids take turn to fall sick...thus we were confined at home from 1st to 3rd day of CNY!
So, anyone going to Klang or anywhere to toss tangerines/mandarin oranges tonite? hehe...

Hope everyone will have a good and fruitful year in this Year of Rabbit!

Cheers!

Creating Memories to foster learning

Hi folks!

Thinking of memories, what comes into your mind immediately?

Childhood memories? University life? Working, wedding, childbirth?

Memories comes when we experience something which carries weight in our mind, our emotion, our body perhaps.

Think of the time we first ride a bicycle, when we first started dating, our first childbirth, etc. These are experiences that carry weight in our mind.

What kind of memories are we facilitating in our child’s learning experiences?

Is it filled of fun, laughter and cheers? Or is it full of fear, threats and disappointment?

I was thinking about this when I was coaching my daughter in her homework. She hated all the writings she needs to do daily (in fact I don’t like it either). And thus, she was dilly-dally in her effort to complete her homework until last minute, before turning to bed. Of course I am furious at her habits. But I also do not wish to use threats and reprimand which might make her even more displease of such task. How can we enhance and make the experience more enriching?

There are times when we have no choice in the things or task that we need to do. If we can only inject some fun and sense into it. Perhaps make it more bearable, if not enjoyable.

Learning by play has been shared by many parenting advocates. I am totally support it. Whenever I need to turn a boring chore to something interesting; create a game out of it is the answer! Children are naturally interested in having play rather than chore.

Besides that, creating memories can also come from daily task. The following are some of the memories I can relate to:

1.       Cooking together
2.       Cleaning the house to prepare for festive new year, party or special gathering
3.       Decorating the room and house together
4.       – add in your list-

Seems that the keyword here is TOGETHER. So let’s share the moments together with our children even when they watch cartoon as we can indeed turn it into memories and learning experience by being together with them!

Cheers!
