The year that was – a meme(Part 1)

Hi folks!

What is a meme? You might asked?

The term Internet meme (pronounced /ˈmiːm/, rhyming with "cream"[1]) is used to describe a concept that spreads via the Internet.[2] The term is a reference to the concept of memes, although the latter concept refers to a much broader

category of cultural information.

In its most basic form, an Internet meme is simply an idea that is propagated through the Web. This idea may take the form of a hyperlink, video, website, hashtag, or even just a word or phrase. This meme may spread from person to person via social networks, blogs, direct email, news sources, and other web-based services
Taken from Wikipedia

Now, I came across this "meme" from a blog I used to read daily, "The year that was – a meme" by Grace who is a Filipino, married a Japanese; and who is staying in Dubai now with her 9-year-old daughter, Pristine.

The main thing attracted me about this task is to bring back the good memories of 2010 as well as the lessons learned. This sort of something I always do at every year end, reflecting at each year progress and hiccups.

If you are interested to do this meme task as well, feel free to copy the following questions(from Grace blog entry here) and have fun answering them. On the 31 Dec 2010, Grace will put up her answers with a linky tool so we can link up her post. Sounds interesting! I would also love to see how everyone's 2010 went(from all over the world!

(of course as Grace mentioned, we can skip questions we don't like to answer! Totally up to us.Grace found this meme in 2006 through Wenchy, a blog friend of hers living in South Africa and ever since, she's been doing it every year. Sounds fun, I might also do such list yearly!)

Cheers and have fun reading or doing it yourself!

Buy CNY foodstuff early

Hi folks!

Have you heard that there'll be price increase next month? Due to the increase of yuan, in conjunction to Chinese New Year, we are asked to buy our stuff early.

I read the news in The Star Online here.

Example of the foodstuff like Chinese mushrooms, from RM50 per kilogramme now, the price will be increased to RM70 next month. Wow...

Not just China products, some of the speciality items for the Lunar New Year imported from other countries had also increased due to cost increase.

Example, for a can of abalone imported from Mexico, the price will increase about RM30 to RM230. A can of abalone from South Africa will increase from RM120 to RM140.

Price of abalone imported from Australia will increase from the current RM70 to RM90 next month, stated in the paper.

Now, will you rush to get your stock replenish? Just yesterday, I was exclaimed to hubby that it's only Christmas, yet I seen stalls selling CNY stuff all around...wow...

And hubby reminded me CNY is just one month away..

Yep, definitely time to stock up some essentials....make a list before we go...don't be overwhelmed and lost in the array of stuff there!

Plan and spend wisely! Reminder to myself :)

Cheers!

All I want for Christmas is....

Hi folks!

I wonder if you are busy choosing or thinking what Christmas gift to get for your loved ones like I do?

First in my list is pressie for my children ;)

And top on my list for my kids are decent and comfortable shoes!

DH & I have been shoes-hunting as much and as many outlets as we can remember. Almost every shopping malls we went, we would check out the shoes section!

Our kids have "fleshy" foot, for KY, for e.g. those princess-like shoes looks real pretty but they are not comfy enough for KY. Each time was like fitting and scouting for Cinderella :P and KY did not fit into those princess glass shoes!!

Same goes for Shone. His first shoe size when he reaches one year old was size 5! A toddler size. I only found a suitable shoes after visiting 3-5 shops. And guess what that shoes only lasted less than 4 months and it can fit his feet anymore!

And now, Christmas is here...so All I want for Christmas (for my kids) would probably be a comfy and practical shoes to wear so that they can accompany mommy for more adventure outdoor(including shopping :D haha)

And, what's more with the crowd at the shopping malls, shopping online is so much more comfy and manageable. And as I browse around, I found this particular site that has range of Baby Shoes  that fits the bill. It has such great varieties of design and some of them looks exactly like what I have worn when I was a kid.

I simply love such shoes because it is very durable and very practical to wear to many different functions. Actually, choosing the right shoes is very important not only to adults but to children too.

Below is a video that illustrate the measure a right fitting shoes.

Wow...Santa is answering to my wishes! Now folks, Have a lovely Christmas time with your family and friends...I am off shoes-hunting and pressie-hunting now...

Cheers!

Gemini Reading for Year 2011

Hi folks!

This is the time of the year again...reflection time and also projection time :) haha...

It's been a habit of mine to check out the reading for the coming year whether is my Star sign or animal sign.

It's more for fun and reference. (I take note of the warning and beamed at the blessings :D)

So, here's my Gemini reading for year 2011 taken from TheStar Horoscope:

Year 2011 Outlook for Gemini

Overall Fortune
Gemini expects to have a smoother year in 2011. For Gemini born before the 10th of June your efforts will be eventually appreciated and you will get promoted. Overall Gemini will encounter less stress in 2011 than in the previous years. Remain confident and industrious.

You expect to see your efforts pay off in 2011. However Gemini should remember to keep a balanced attitude. Do not get too proud.

Career
Everything expects to be in favour of Gemini on career development in 2011. Keep your eyes open for new opportunities and deal with difficulties with a calm attitude. Do not get too impatient. Learn to pay attention to what you do and avoid doing anything that might bring you trouble later.

Relationship and marriage
Gemini might feel at loss after a relationship. Remember that relationship is mutual. Do not get too impatient and anxious. Keep cool-headed.

Money management and investment
Gemini should learn to take one step at a time. You expect too much at the beginning by making risky decisions. Do not become too changeable and do not follow the trend. Learn to think and act cautiously. Improve yourself and try to make friends with similar interests. Gather your fortune with an honourable manner.

Caution
One can not make good achievements by changing his goals continuously.

Ok this is an important one....time to set my goals(recycle the ones yet to achieve this year as well! :P ) now and stick with it throughout the year! Wait till I cross check my 2010 goals :D

Cheers!

All 22 highway concessionaires(do you know which are theyt?) are currently giving between 5% and 37% toll discount in the form of cash and rebates until Dec 31 in conjunction with the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

I think they should offer till 1 Jan 2011... :) who knows the queue might be making the time drag till next year....??!!

Cheers and wow..can't help expressing it's new year soon!

Winter Solstice (Dong Zhi)

Hi folks!

Today is the annual Winter Solstice (Dong Zhi) festival
celebrated by Chinese. For many families, Winter Solstice (Dong Zhi) is
even bigger than the Chinese New Year.To Chinese, it is traditionally
celebrated at the beginning of winter to remind of another year gone by, and
for one to look forward to the new year. We are considered older one year
after each Dong Zhi.

Typically, on this day, we will make Tang Yuan (glutinous rice ball). My mom
will make the the sweet syrup either from rock sugar or brown sugar and add
pandan leaves and ginger.

Nowadays, Tang Yuan can be bought in supermarkets. They are available in all
sorts of fillings, e.g. in black sesame paste, red bean paste, groundnut
paste, etc. Some stalls would also sell ready-made Tang Yuan dough where you
can just purchase and roll into ball shape for those who still like to
experience the making of Tang Yuan ball without spending time to make the
dough.

So, how did you spend your Dong Zhi? Did you make your own Tang Yuan or buy
off-the-shelf?

No matter how we celebrated, I hope 2011 will be a better year for everyone,
a self-awakening year and a proactive year whereby everyone believes in the
power and the role we can play to make this earth a better place to stay!
Every single steps and thoughts we generate affects this tiny earth we all
call our "Home".

Cheers!

Octopus

Hi folks!

I am truly glad to find that the theatre development in Malaysia (in particularly in Kuala Lumpur) is getting more and more vibrant!

Recently came across another performance called Octopus at The Star Online here.

Venue: Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre

Date: Now until Dec 22, 2010

Title: OCTOPUS

Content: It starts off with Kevin and Blake, a young and good-looking couple, invite the older and more experienced Max and Andy to their place for a night of fun.

Despite their reservations, nervousness eventually gives way to excitement, and after some initial awkwardness, the two pairs click. Before they know it, some clothes come off (to the delight of many of the women and gay men in the audience) and a night of pleasure ensues.

For more details of the story, check out the write up at The Star Online here.

Starring: Malik Taufiq (left) and Will Quah

'Octopus' is on at Pentas 2, KLPac (Jalan Strachan, Off Jalan Ipoh, Sentul Park), until Wednesday.

Showtime is 8.30 nightly and tickets are RM38 and RM25 (students). Call 03-4047 9000 or visit klpac.org.

Cheers to the theatre and art performance in Malaysia!

MAS flights to London disrupted

Hi folks!

Christmas is approaching and many people are heading back to their hometown to celebrate Christmas with their family and friends...

Today I read about the news that two flights to London's Heathrow airport.are cancelled and passengers are requested to re-book their tickets on other MH flights. They are MH2 from Kuala Lumpur to London scheduled to depart at 11.55pm yesterday and flight MH3 from London to Kuala Lumpur scheduled to depart at 10.50am today.

One of my UK friend (Charlotte) is heading back last Saturday to visit her family and friends. I hope she managed to catch the flight and arrive safely.

For more information about the flight disruption, passengers taking MAS airline are advised to check their flight status at www.malaysiaairlines.com or call MAS Call Centre at 1-300-88-3000 within Malaysia or +603-78433000 outside Malaysia, before proceeding to the airport.

However, AirAsia X Chief Executive Officer Azran Osman Rani said all AirAsia X flights would be operating normally.

He said the Air Asia X D72009 had to land at Birmingham Airport on Saturday as Stansted Airport was congested when planes which were supposed to land at Heathrow were diverted to Stansted, resulting in passengers being delayed for 20 hours.

A statement issued by Stansted airport's website, http://www.stanstedairport.com, said the airport is open and does not have any periods of snowfall forecast for today.

Hope the heavy snowfall will back to normal soon.

Merry Christmas to everyone and have a safe and bless homecoming!

Cheers!

Power CEO Vegans

Hi folks!
Today is 15th day of 11th month on lunar calendar and many Buddhist will practice vegetarian diet today.
I started from having vegetarian meal every 1st and 15th with my mom when I was 8 years old. And ever since turning into full-time vegetarian diet when I was 14, my gastric problem gradually  reduced to zero.
In recent years, there are more and more people adopting plant-based diet for eco-conscious reason.
I read that in US alone, 17% of the population are on plant-based/vegetarian/vegan diet! Below are some notable Power CEO Vegans!
Power CEO Vegans
.1. Steve Wynn, American casino resort and real-estate developer who has been credited for re-surging and expanding the Las Vegas Strip in the 1990s
2. Russell Simmons, co-founder of hip-hop label Def Jam and creator of clothing lines Phat Farm, Argylculture, and American Classics
3. Former President Bill Clinton, who now runs the William J. Clinton Foundation
4. Bill Ford, Executive Chairman of the Board for Ford Motor Company
5. Biz Stone, co-founder and creative director of Twitter
6. Joi Ito, venture captalist, CEO of Creative Commons, and General Partner of Neoteny Labs
7. John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods Market
8. Mort Zuckerman, real estate magnate
9. Mike Tyson, yes the Mike Tyson, who has traded ear-biting for pigeon tending in Arizona
10. Alec Baldwin, who plays a CEO in 30 Rock, but also keeps a public profile off-screen in animal rights activism
Now, being vegetarian or adopting plant-based diet is no longer consider a taboo, but it's very much the healthy and environmental-friendly trend now.
Everyone can start from a single step by taking a pledge to reduce meat intake, a meal per day or one day weekly! For the sake of this earth and your health too!
Cheers!

BlackBerry narrowly beats iPhone?

Hi folks!

Before I start using iPhone(much thanks to DH who gave me an iPhone as my birthday present), I am not so much into smartphones, gadgets and apps. And, for all you know, I might not even change my Nokia 3210(also a gift from then boyfriend and now hubby) if not it starts malfunctioning then.

After using iPhone, I am marvelled at how user-friendly and the enormous applications that comes with it. And, it did not stopped me from checking out BlackBerry though, being curious I am over the nearest smart phone rival....

I got to know Blackberry is adopted mostly by business executives while iPhone is mostly to geeks. But if I(and my kids) were to make a choice between iPhone and Blackberry, it would be iPhone.

Now, coming to the news I read few days ago..."BlackBerry narrowly beats iPhone??!!"...of WOW!!! That must comes from the purchasing power of the Business people....and of course the fact that it is doubtless quite good for e-mailing....and chatting amongst BB user.

Now,Out of curiousity..hehe..if your phone starts malfunctioning now, which smartphone would you choose to buy? Will u pick iPhone or Blackberry?

Like to hear from you all! :)

Cheers!

Ask What Can I Do?

Hi folks!

Am reflecting a lot today.... While waiting for my zzz mood to set in...doing my best to rest despite the piles of unfolded clothes, unwashed dishes, unmanned kids who aren't feeling drowsy way past bedtime, MIA DH who himself are ever tired fulfilling his own duty and mission in a tired body...

I am learning to ask myself What Can I Do? More than I ask and expressed If only who & who could do this and that....

This way I feel more in control, less resentful,
More independent, less whining,
More power, less weakening spirit....

How many times we are faced with repeated tasks that need to be completed no matter what condition we are in-
to quote a few- uninterested, bored, ill, rushed, stressed,etc...

There's no where/way to hide or avoid
We can only pull ourselves up & do the Best we can
And learn to be wiser & stronger along the way

Keeping our patience, love and sheer determination with us
Complete the task with nothing but sense of responsibility & faith
That we have ask What I Can do? And Done it to our Best!
There we shall have no regrets.... Even if the day ends right away.....end peacefully ....with dignity....

Feel better after writing these thoughts out....
As my zzzzz mood arrive, it's time to say goodnite!
To a better day tomorrow......Goodnite everyone...sleep tight!

Cheers!

Inject Excitement in Mundane Tasks

Hi folks!

Have we all experience a stage whereby we felt stagnant, bored, and listless or lack of enthusiasm on our day-to-day tasks?

When we are confined to doing day-to-day repeated tasks with no creativity, growth or new development, learning or adventures; we easily get bored and unhappy with the mundane task we are “forced” to perform daily.

Therefore it is so important to keep things FRESH!
This applies to stay at home moms or dads as well as working folks!

And how do we do that?

Here are some examples of injecting “freshness” in the ways we do our daily chores:

1. Pick up new languages and practice it daily with your child, colleagues, pen pals etc.

2. Learn and experiment with new recipes.

3. Pick another route and learn new routes.

4. Go to a different market to purchase your groceries. The unfamiliarity will inject some inconvenience for some, yet, it helps to keep your brain alert and away from auto-pilot mode; and most importantly start thinking and exploring again.
5. Try out different things or hobbies during a scheduled ME time. Try making your own mask, baking, cycling, soaking in bubble bath, write letters to friends or yourself, romp through your wardrobe and have a short mini fashion show session trying out all the clothes and matching attires like you never before!

Sounds fun? Do you feel the “excitement” now?

Injecting some excitement is like for any employees sending for training and refreshment courses. It will broaden up our perspective and allows some creativity and new learning mode to take place!

Are you gamed for some unconventional adventures?

What are the things you would do to inject back some excitement?

Shall we share the first 1-3 things that come to our mind?

Cheers!

Goal Setting 2: Be Consistent

Hi folks!
The year 2010 is reaching the last month for the year. Time really flies...This is the time to reflect and springclean our goals , our house, our mind...etc.
And, as I was doing some springcleaning on my blog, I found this old entry which I wrote but forgot to publish. And fast forward, I have now managed to bring my two kids out not just to the playground but to do some shopping and marketing as well. I did just that during a brief one week+ off days I enjoyed tremendously with my kids while my babysitter is on leave(on her truly deserved vacation!)

So, here it is...a record of my checklist no. 2- Strike off! Yippee!!
-----------------------------------
I have marked off the first checklist of my goal no.2 during CNY. I brought my kids to playground on own (yippee…finally!!). However, it does not ends very well as Kay Yee threw tantrum(refused to leave the playground) and asked to be carried…and my hands are full carrying Shone….luckily DH came to my rescue…..Phew…not easy…I simply have to choose the right time, place and approach. Keep it coming~
Now, after moving on with my goal 1 successfully (one task done at least), I like to move on to my next goal for year 2010- Be Consistent!
One of my closest friend and mentor once commented a stranger whom I befriended commented how she finds me at time mature, at time solemn, at time jovial and at time seems "lost" during one of the activity we did together in an event.
And when I reflected on it ..yes, I have been not very consistent in my emotions, effort, etc. Is this a trait for Gemini? :P haha…

But I sure hope to be:
  • Consistently Good
  • Consistently Jovial and Spirited
  • Consistently Respectful to People around me especially my family
  • Consistently Effective and Efficient at Work
  • Consistently Dependable and Trustworthy as a Person

Complicated huh?
Let's see how and what activities I can accomplish with this mindset…Be Consistent..
Seriously, I feel people can understand you better and able to trust you better when you are consistent. Imagine how hubby would feel when you are cold at one time and hot at another…or to friends when you are jovial at one time and moody and etc at another point of time…or to business clients, you can't promise one thing and then change your goods/service at a switch of thoughts/time…correct?

So yes! Be Consistent in every way I can be! When I said I want to do something…mean it and do it! Make my action consistent with what I pledge to do!
Cheers!

What do you do when your kids fight?

Hi folks!
For those who have more than one child or perhaps your kids mingle around a lot with other kids be it their cousins, playmates, classmates, etc; you will have experienced these "fighting" scenes.

So what do you normally do? Will you act as a peace-maker, judge, or police officer by dispersing and separating them?

Ever since my two kids are old enough to fight over things, I often had to be the peacemaker, judge and sometimes the police officer.

Let's see what difference these three different roles make:

Peacemaker
Peacemaker is one who gets the kids to make peace and be friends once more.
What I usually do is I will tell both of them that they are brother and sister; and in my case, since I only have two children; I said "You only had each other, so you must love one another." And told each of them how much the other party loves them or dotes on them (when they aren't fighting then; they really do love each other! It's really a Love-Hate relationship here :P)
It often ends with a hug, kisses and hand-shakes.

Judge
Judge is often one who is brought in to judge a fight; to say which is the right and wrong parties and then accord the rightful punishment to the "guilty" party.
This is the most difficult role to play as you do not want to act biased and most of the time you were not there to witness who is at wrong in the first place.
When I am "forced" to take up this role, most of the time I would sentence both party as "guilty". Yep, not exactly a good judge here but I want to let them know that when things happened both parties are at wrong and should not put the blame on the other party.

Police Officer
Police officer is the one who enforce the punishment. Most of the time, my hubby is the one who played this "Bad Guy" role.
He would confiscate the toys they are fighting over, enforce time outs, remove privileges such as movie watching, shopping or computer games.

So which role do you play when the kids fight? Do you have any best practices or tips to share?

Love to hear from all of you!

Cheers!

Get On Board, Raise Your Hands!*post updated*

Note: This post shall be up till the last day of this campaign, i.e. 10 Dec, 2010 as an act to spread the news and support the campaign! Please SCROLL DOWN to view TODAY's posting :) Thanks!

Hi folks!

UNICEF has started a nationwide movement called "Get on Board" to provide the public with the information, insight and resources to stop child abuse.

With this knowledge it hopes to empower everyone to protect the children in our families and communities.

The campaign will run for two months. It was launched on 6 October in Kuala Lumpur and will culminate on 10 December (in conjunction with Human Rights Day). Let us show our children that at least a 100,000 of us care.

Go to this site: http://uniteagainstabuse.my/ to find out more on what you can do to support this campaign!

The more people who raise their hand to be counted, the stronger the campaign becomes to deter an abuser from hurting a child.

You can become a Campaigner for Children by hopping on our bus, and rallying others to join us on our journey to end child abuse in Malaysia by registering here  http://www.uniteagainstabuse.my/act/register.

I have raised my hand here: http://uniteagainstabuse.my/molly-lim, how about you?
